Vosshall, who investigates how sensory stimuli are perceived and processed, and Casanova, who studies the genetics of infectious disease susceptibility in children, are among the new members and foreign associates to be inducted into the Academy in 2015. With Vosshall and Casanova’s election, Rockefeller now boasts 36 members or foreign associates of the National Academy of Sciences among its current faculty.
Darnell, who focuses on understanding a group of rare brain diseases, the paraneoplastic neurologic disorders (PNDs), and how they arise in conjunction with immune responses to cancer, is one of 84 newly elected members announced today by the Academy.

Professor Roderick MacKinnon, head of the Laboratory of Molecular Neurobiology and Biophysics and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, was elected to membership in the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) at the Academy’s 137th meeting on Tues., May 2. MacKinnon studies the functional and structural architecture of ion channel proteins, molecules that govern the electrical potential of membranes throughout nature, thereby generating nerve impulses and controlling muscle contraction, cardiac rhythm and hormone secretion.
